We offer four different workshop spaces varying in size, character and charm. The spaces provide an ideal environment for retreat participants to pursue self-exploration, growth and re-discover personal peace and wellbeing. Our smallest space seats 1-30 (Prema Lounge) and our largest up to 150. In the warmer summer months we also have 2 additional outdoor tents to hire.
The Prema Centre, at the heart of Kawai Purapura, encompasses two clinic rooms, our reception, dining area, kitchen and lounge. This space has a wonderful ambiance with open fireplaces, sunny bush-clad outlooks and expansive decks.
The Prema Lounge is a large, carpeted workshop space that offers an open fireplace, sunny bush-clad outlook and opens out onto the expansive deck.
Size: Top level – 10m x 3m Bottom level – 10m x 5m.
Shanti Yoga Studio
Nestled in amongst the native forest, the Shanti Yoga Studio provides a large floor space that is ideally suited to a diverse range of movement-based activities such as yoga, tai chi, dance, meditation retreats and body therapies. It currently features a broad range of community yoga and other classes, including the new Kawai Purapura Yoga Studio teachers. The Shanti Yoga Studio is equipped with a wood-burning fireplace, beautiful traditional mandala and spiritual altar.
Size: 14m x 10m
The Lotus Sanctuary
The Lotus Sanctuary is a large workshop space located a sufficient distance from the Prema Centre to offer seclusion for those requiring extended yoga, meditation or fasting retreats. It has its own built-in kitchen and new ablution facilities have recently been added to this space.
Size: 8m x 15m
Whare Kahikatea is our beautiful new workshop space – a large open space looks out on a grassy plain sheltered by a large tree canopy and gently flowing stream. The 12m x 12m polished wooden floor space makes it an ideal venue for larger seminars and workshops and physical activities such as yoga, tai chi and dance. It has a high ceiling, expansive windows, and wood-burning fireplace.
Size: 12m x 12m
Swimming Pool and Spa Pool
You can unwind or exercise in the 25-metre, non-chlorinated, solar-heated pool during the summer season. The spa pool seats up to 6 and can be hired out on a per hour basis.
The Glade provides a unique spiritual setting surrounded by trees and a gentle flowing stream for your special outdoor sacred activities, such as circle dancing, ceremonies, weddings and celebrations.
Up the path from the main centre, the Glade offers a unique and spiritual location for our community. Criss-crossed by walkways, Kawai Purapura is connected to the adjacent Council Reserve land with streams and mature native trees, including the magnificent Kahikatea. If you take a walk at dusk, you can enjoy an extraordinary display by the glow worms as the evening begins.
A Sweatlodge is a sacred site consisting of a rock fire circle, spirit-line bridge, and non-traditional willow sweatlodge structure set amid tall kahikatea forest. The healing process of this natural purification ceremony can cater for groups of up to 15.
Retreat groups may wish to incorporate the guided, natural, spiritual/ritual sauna experience as part of their retreat, by request and offer of koha. Further information upon enquiry. The Rock Fire Circle (23 rock seats around a firepit) can also be hired for an outdoor event.
We’ve had our very own teepee made which we use as an additional workshop venue during the festival season. The teepee is a powerful space which has hosted a wide range of activities. We’ve used it for sit-down music concerts, stand-up poetry, African dance and drumming workshops, yoga and story telling. Chairs and/or mats can be provided, depending on the requirements of the event. The teepee is only available to hire in February and March.
Size: 9m diameter
The Bedouin Tent
Perfect for adding a touch of Arabian magic to your event, the Bedouin tent is the newest addition to our retreat venue family. Oozing character and charm this tent is great as a secondary break out space and also available to hire for weddings and parties throughout the year. We’ve used it as a chai tent and cafe at our festivals but it can also be set up with chairs, mats or cushions if required.
Size: 12m x 8m
“Kawai Purapura is a very special place run by people full of heart and grace. We had our event in The Lotus Sanctuary which is a truly beautiful room to be in, with wonderful light, gorgeous views of the bush and all the facilities we could need. We cannot wait for our next event at Kawai Purapura! Thank you so much.”
– Sue Barley (event evaluation form for the Compton Rom event, August 2012)
“We were fortunate enough to enjoy your incredible cooking for lunch several days, in addition to various baked treats. It was truly some of the best food we’ve had – our favourite kind of cooking! Thank you so much for feeding us so well at the beautiful Kawai Purapura.”
– Sarah M. (visitor during the Barral and Upledger visceral manipulation course)
Broadband facilities are available to retreat participants with laptops. A desktop computer is alternatively available in the Koru Room, underneath Prema.
